Sitting down with the Sunday papers I just read an interesting article about Pete Cowan in the Scotland on Scotland. He said to Colin Montgomerie just before he accepted the BBC award for coach of the year “You’re not going to seriously accept this are you?” Colin then replied, I will but then ill give it to you. Outwith the tight knit and peak of the golfing world this is man few would recognise, even many top sporting journalists don’t know him.

There were of course 4 major winners in 2010. In March, Phil Mickleson pickup the first, then Northern Irelands Graham McDowell at Pebble Beach, Louis Oosthuizen at St Andrews and Germanys Martin Kayper at the PGA, the final major of 2010. Pete Cowan remarkably is coach to two of these players, McDowell and Oosthuizen.

The laid back and former pro himself resides from Yorkshire and is regularly used ti flying under the radar. As a pro he failed to hit the heights but s a coach he’s highly regarded as one of the best, certainly with the top European players. He is also coach to Lee Westwood who currently holds the coveted best ranked player in the world.

He firmly believes in the short game as secret to success, nothing that new some may say, as even many good amateurs could say that. But a lot of his students game is concentrated on the short game whilst the long game progresses. He believes that they need to have complete confidence in their short game as thats what will get them out of trouble then the long game deserts them.

His players have amassed over 100 wins on the European tour, not bad for someone even to the most travelled sports journalists don’t know exists.

Fernando Torres looks set to leave Liverpool for the Dark blue side of London, Chelsea. Kenny Dalglish has tried to persuade the Spaniard to stay but the prospects of trophies at Liverpool has made Torres decide to look for pastures new.

Torres signed from Athletico Madrid for 20M in 2007 becoming the clubs biggest ever signing. His first few seasons were fruitful with him bagging dozens of goals, making him on the most feared strikers in world football. Recent games under new manager Dalglish his performances have improved scoring 3 goals in the last 4 games.

Previously Torres has admitted his affection for the club and fans that adore him. After winning the world cup in the summer with Spain it seems Torres is looking for his club career to earn him more trophies and recognition as the World best striker and with Liverpool’s recent struggles they cant be described anywhere near one of the best European clubs.

Captain Steven Gerrard has also begged with Torres to stay with the Meryside club but Torres seems determined to leave. There is a 50M fee in his contract which still has 3 years left. Chelsea owner Ambramovic seems likely to increase their 35M offer which was made on Friday 28th January. There is also talk of a player swap deal with Anelka who would return to Anfield after a loan spell in 2002.

Gerard himself twice nearly joined Chelsea in the summers of 2008 and 2009. Being a scouser though was one of the reasons why he couldn’t make the decision to leave his beloved club. In Torres does join and its looking more likely than not, Chelsea’s season may still not be that successful after trailing Manchester United by a number of points. The Torres signing would likely rejuvenate the Blues and surely become a potent threat alongside Didier Drogba.

Britain’s Andy Murray lost in straight sets to the Serbian Novak Djokovic in a tough battle in Melbourne. Andy has beaten Novak in the last of the three meetings but had never played against each other in a major before. The 4 previous meetings before Murrays threesome of victories Novak had won them all so before today the Serb had a 4-3 record versus the Scot.

Today Novak Djokovic won convincingly in straight sets and was the worthy winner. He would have beat any other player in the world and was in delightful form. The semi final against Federer on Thursday and in the quarter final versus Berdych he won both matches in straight sets and today was no different. He was the best and most consistent player in the tournament and it was fitting he won it.

Andy Murray didn’t have his best match, his unforced error count was too high to win a grand slam. There are matches certainly in the tournaments out with the Slams, which are 3 sets in which he his unforced error count is sometimes below 5. He normally waits for mistakes but it was clear early on that Djokovic was going to be tough to beat with him beating himself, but producing countless errors.

By today’s showing Novak showed is has the best defensive game in the sport. It was impenetrable, Murray on occasions did out hit him but not enough times. The amazing thing about the Serbs game is that he doesn’t only get the ball back into play from tough spots but can turn these defensive positions into points in which he can win. There is no one out with himself and Nadal that can do this so well. On numerous long rallies today it looked like Murray had a good chance of the point but incredible strikes from Novak turned the rallies in a single shot. His sliding into and stretching for balls which were returned with interest more often than not was a joy to watch.

Novak Djokovic (3rd seed) 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 Any Murray (5th seed)

Spannish 22 year old Rafael Nadal, who looks like he will take over the world number one spot Federer in the near future, took apart Britain’s Andy Murray in a stunning display of powerful, accurate and frankly ruthless tennis today at Wimbledon.

A MURRAY (GB) 12 v R NADAL (Spa) 2

3-6 2-6 4-6

After Andy Murrays famous comeback on Monday against Gasquet, Andy Murray was up against the awesome Nadal. It was back down to earth with a bang for the Scotsman who never got going in the match. This was due to him being tired from his early week excerpts, but was mainly due to Nadal who simply never let him get going.

Nadals shots were coming from all angles of the court with ferocious power. Murray had to work for nearly every point he made. As John Mcenroe said on the BBC’s commentary, “There is Federer and Nadal, there is Djokovic then there is the rest.” Today it was clearly evident there is a gap between the top 2 or 3, and the ‘rest’.

Murray can be immensely pround of his Wimbledon performaces though. He reached the quarter finals of a Grand Slam event for the first time in his short career. At only 21 there is certainly hope for tennis glory for the Scot. He made many fans from his epic comeback, and the future of British Tennis is in capable hands, in the name of Andy Murray.

2 Russian stars of tennis endured a mental tirade of emotions, in one of the womans 1/4s at Wimbledon.

Elena DEM’VA (Rus) 5 bt v Nadia PETROVA (Rus) 21

6-1 6-7 (6-8) 6-3

Similar to Andy Murrays eventual victory v Gasquet there was real psychological troubles in this match for both players. Dementieva like Gasquet, blew her fellow Russian away with stunning tennis and was odds on the progress into the semi final in straight sets.

However, clearly she thought she had made and could not serve the match out, at 5-1 up in the second set. It was only then, like Murray, Petrova started to play anything like the tennis she is capable of. She won next 6 games, then winning the tie breaker to make the match even at 1-1.

Her momentum was haulted in the deciding set by Dementieva, who finally overcome that barrier and won the set. The win now see’s her play the current champion, Serena Williams in the semi final.

2 sets down with Gasquet serving for the match, Andy Murray produced a stunning come back to beat the French man.

Any Murray (Uk) beat Richard Gasquet (Fr)

5-7 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 6-4

The turning point seemed to be initiated by the crowd, with young French player complaining about the noise and chanting between points. Of course the crowd were then even more spurred on, in that the support for Murray was getting to him.

In the second set leading up to the 11th, Gasquet looked in total control and was cruising to victory then bang. Something seem to immediately loose his concentration. From then on, he didnt look anything like the player he was in the first set and games in the second. It really was quite a turn around. In the games leading up to the 6-5 lead in the 3rd set, Gasquet produced classy, world class tennis, with passing shots that looked so easy. He looked calm and in total control of proceedings.

Murray took full control of the match and won the next 3 sets winning the match. It was sport at its best and with no UK participation the country is now again rejoicing sporting success. Success may be seen by some only by winning the Wimbledon competition, but for someone to produce such great entertainment, tennis and determination, its gives us British a lot of hope for future.

Murray will now play the recent French Open winner Rafal Nadal, who will provide a tougher test than Gasguet. However full credit go to both men in todays match, Gasquest took part Murray in the first 2 sets. Nadal and Federer will not have it easy in the next few years if these guys aged 22 and 21 respectively, repeat and improve on their great showings today.

Christiano Ronaldo told reporter Guillem Balague he has played his last game in the English Premier league. His comments came straight after Portugals defeat to Germany in Euro 2008. Ronaldo has been the subject of Real Madrid interest for many months. Manchester United felt the heat from the Spannish champions so much they reported Real, to Fifa only 2 weeks ago.

The price?

A figure of 100M Euros – roughly £80M. This will be the highest ever transfer fee in football history if the deals progresses. It seems that the lifestyle, money and prestige of Real Madrid, has won over the star, who last season was without doubt the worlds best player.
